Conflict Phrasebook #1

The AFP blog offers a handy primer on how to speak ‘Mexican drug war’. Some examples:

Crimen organizado = organized crime

Sicarios = hitmen

Secuestros = kidnappings

Descuartizados = cut into pieces

Tiroteo = shoot-out

Cadavares = bodies

Contributor Sophie Nicholson notes: ‘Pozolero has appeared only once but it was difficult to forget. Meaning ‘stew maker,’ it was the nickname for Mexican Santiago Meza Lopez, notorious for dissolving hundreds of bodies in acid’. Yikes.
